The cartoon character in the animated film Popeye builds his strength by eating canned spinach. A new German study has found that ecdysterone, a spinach extract, has a similar effect to steroids and does indeed improve performance and suggests it should be added to the doping list.

Plant Extract supplier

The Free University of Berlin published the results on its website on June 25。 But the athletes in the study took a smaller daily dose of ecdysterone, equivalent to about 250 grams to 4 kilograms of spinach, the researchers said。 To get the same effect, people would have to eat 1kg to 16kg of spinach a day for weeks。

In the study, the researchers divided the athletes into two groups. One group received the spinach extract and the other received a placebo. After a few weeks, the athletes who eventually took ecdysterone outperformed the control group in strength.

In both laboratory and animal studies, ecdysterone has been shown to enhance muscle cells even more than anabolic steroids, the researchers said.

The study was commissioned and funded by the World Anti-Doping Agency。 The German media said it was still up to the organization to decide whether to list ecdysterone as a banned drug。
